AHSANTE TOURS - REVIEWS

Ahsante Tour reviews have been independently collected, by VentureFar, from trekkers who perviously climbed with this tour operator. Trekkers were asked to rate Ahsante Tours on the quality of five key factors:

Professionalism, Tour Guides & Staff, Safety Practices, Equipment & Food

"I never felt that I was somehow in the wrong hands. The guides and service staff on the trek were absolutely incredible! Keeping me focused, positive, happy, comfortable! On one particularly difficult day when the altitude started getting to me, my guide Jimmy, came to my side, put his arm around my shoulders, asked me if I was alright. Obviously, I was a shade lighter (or greener) and was trying to focus my attention on breathing deeply. Jimmy just sat there for some time while I tried to regain my strength, and finally said, "Yobi, don't try to be a hero. If you need me to help you carry your day pack, I will, that's why I'm here. If you need me to sing you a song, I will, that's why I'm here. But only you can keep moving. You can do this." Without him, I would have never made it up that mountain. **I would like to mention that I was in a group of 7. My co-climbers' guides also provided me and my friends with undescribable support and kept us all safe"

"I first went on a wildlife safari with Ahsante Tours and then later went on a climb up Kilimanjaro with them. Both trips were excellent. To focus on the Kili climb, my guide was marvelous. He was entertaining, patient, positive, and VERY supportive and motivational. I can't say enough good things about him and the rest of the crew at Ahsante Tours. It was clear they liked what they were doing and wanted all of us to make it safely to the summit. The food was plentiful and very tasty (a welcomed surprise on top of a mountain and after a long day of trekking). The owner of Ahsante Tours, Cuthbert, is very friendly, knowledgeable, and was helpful in making sure we were properly outfitted for the climb. He is obviously very well liked and respected by his guides and the many porters working on Kilimanjaro -- a great testament to him and to the way Ahsante Tours does business and treats its employees. I had heard lots of positive things about Ahsante Tours which is why I booked my trips with them and I'm very glad I did. They were wonderful! I highly recommend Ahsante Tours. In fact a co-worker of mine recently climbed Kili with Ahsante Tours based on my recommendation and he was also very glad he did. I hope to return to Tanzania next summer and will definitely again book my safari with Ahsante Tours."

"Sleeping bags & tents were a bit old but functional and the food was good - although the portions were waaaaaay too big! Our crew were outstanding though, very professional, fun and patient with our occasional girly histrionics. We couldn't have done it without them!"

"Outstanding experience from start to finish. We booked our trip and communicated primarily through Doreen. She was well organized and extremely helpful. The process was well communicated and her follow through was accurate and timely. The personal touch offered by our guide "Whitey" began at the airport and was evident throughout the trip. Each day was a fun and enlightening adventure. Whitey's knowledge of the mountain and his experience as a guide were sources of great confidence and learning. His team was well prepared and extremely accommodating. The summit night/day was awe inspiring and a memory I'll have forever. The entire trip was very well orchestrated and proceeded smoothly from start to finish. We could not have had a better experience."

"Overall, we had a very positive and pleasant experience with Ahsante Tours. From the initial email contact with the office staff, through the interaction with the local guides and drivers, the service was professional and everyone was courteous and friendly. Ahsante Tours organized a 3.5 week adventure vacation for our group of four, which included a trek of Kilimanjaro, a Serengeti safari and a week on Zanzibar. There were no glitches of any kind during our 3.5 week vacation and this included a lot of logistical planning. During our trek on Kilimanjaro, one person in our group suffered from altitude sickness and had to descent one day early. The chief guide made a fast decision and quickly organized a guided descent and also a car pickup at the end of the trail. The company also made arrangements for a hospital visit with a local guide who was familiar with the hospital procedures. This was an invaluable service! We would otherwise have had great difficulty navigating the local medical system. Although the local medical facilities are very primitive in comparison to our home country, the people were wonderful and friendly and did their best to make us feel supported. All in all, Ahsante Tours provided excellent and reliable service, although not classified at "luxury level", but all around we'd definitely recommend them!"

"Very friendly and professional team with young people. The guide was very skilled and experienced. We had a plan to reach the top and we kept to the plan. Another very important issue was that there was a normal dialogue about the tipping procedure."

"We were extremely pleased with all aspects of the tour including their ability to demonstrate integrity prior to booking then to deliver on what was promised. From a value perspective we found them excellent and what's more...one of our group, an overweight, seriously unfit desk jockey summited thanks to the commitment of the Ashante crew and his own stubbornness."

"Very satisfied. They were prompt and responsive when I was making reservations. They were extremely helpful when we were in Moshi both before and after the trek. The entire team that accompanied us on the climb was great and the guide and assistant guide in particular were both excellent. The equipment and gear were very good without being luxurious, and their rates were very reasonable - they are not a luxury operation with a lot of needless frills, but they have all the important stuff. My only negative comment is that they forgot to take proper protective covers for the bags and the contents got wet in the rain. But their other actions more than compensated for this oversight..."

"We (my wife and I) travelled to Tanzania in October 2011. We've learned about Ahsante Tours via Rough Guide to Tanzania. Before the trip we've researched and compared about a dozen of different companies. We decided to go with Ahsante for three main reasons: competitive prices, good reviews, and their treatment of porters. Initially, we considered Ahsante only for Kili climb, but ended up using Ahsante for most of our bookings (safari, Zanzibar). Overall, we were very pleased with Ahsante. We had some worries with transferring the downpayment and finalizing the price (our itinerary at the end became fairly complex and the invoice included several errors, mostly due to us changing the dates several times). Ahsante was extremely responsive. We were getting answers to our questions the next day and sometimes in real-time via Skype. Such responsiveness gave us a lot of confidence and was another factor that convinced us to go with Ahsante. All arrangements we made with Ahsante worked perfectly: all pick ups where on time, all staff was extremely helpful and friendly, in several cases, what we payed for hotels was actually below what we would have payed if booking independently. With respect to Kili climb: We used Machame route. There were two of us, a guide and the support team. The guide (Shaban) was very good! They met with us a day before the trek. Shaban reviewed our clothes and footwear to ensure that we have everything we need. Shaban quite impressed us with how closely he was watching us to make sure that we are safe. He knows a lot about the mountain, so it was very educational as well. Humour, jokes, encouragement, his support played very important role. The camp management and organization were flawless. The team actually has a role of a camp manager who is responsible for finding a good spot for the tents, setting up tents, and other logistics. The porters were all very friendly, always ready to help, responsive to any our request. We never had any issues with camp, tents, etc. They were feeding us very well! The cook actually very surprised us with quality of food (considering the conditions). Everything was delicious and nutritional. Interestingly, the guide was always carefully watching our appetite, etc. to make sure that we do not have any symptoms of high altitude sickness. Boiled water (actually, filtered first, and then boiled) was always available for us se we could fill our flasks. (We were adding water purifying tablets as well, just in case - still not sure if this required though). The only (relatively) negative experience we had was related to tips. We used as a guide tipping recommendations published on Ahsante site. However, two things did not work as we expected: 1) number of porters: from were beginning we asked about the number of porters. The office told us one number, but at the end, on the mountain we found that there were more porters. And even more, some of the porters, cook and camp manager were shared with other couple, also trekking with Ahsante. We would recommend to request in advance the number of people in your support team. 2) the guide actually suggested different tipping guidelines (after the summit climb, on our last camp), which were much higher than what we planned for (plus, for a larger number of people than we planned for). Interestingly, at the end of the trek we did not mind at all tipping the team - they really work very hard, and helped us a lot, we even felt that we became friends. But not as much as the new "guidelines" were... Anyway, we tipped the team as we planned initially, within the budget we allocated for that and explained our approach to the guide. They accepted it well, and this "incident" did not change anything, in attitude towards us, etc. We would recommend to clarify the tipping guidelines before the trek, and, maybe, with the guide directly."

"All the porters were professional, keen and polite. On the summit day they were incredible and I don't think half of us would have made it without them. I sadly became unconscious on the descent and am alive today thanks to the porters who carried me down the mountain! While in hospital it was Abel from Ashanti tours who looked after me, brought me food, sorted my bills, sorted hotel accommodation for me when discharged as the rest of the group had left a few days before me, he drove me to get medicines etc, I will never be able to thank him and Ashanti tours enough. They were incredible. Everyone thought the same."

Our lead guide took care of our group of 8 people with a keen eye for individual strengths & weaknesses. The entire team of 33 porters was cordial and very warm towards us. They were all able to prepare us for the real challenge on the summit day, gradually.
